Who is Mario Garcia?

Mario is CEO and founder of Garcia Media and also works as a Senior Adviser on News Design as an Adjunct Professor at Columbia, University, Graduate School of Journalism.

Mario is globally known as one of the premiere news media designers, having completed close to 700 projects in 120 countries, including:

Mario is also well-known in the area of designing digital editions - especially on the tablet platform. Mario often tells everyone that he is, first and foremost, a teacher. Most recently he has been appointed the Hearst Digital Media Professor in Residence at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. Mario started his teaching career as a journalism professor and publications adviser at his alma mater, Miami-Dade Community College.

From there he became a professor of graphic arts at Syracuse Universityʼs Newhouse School of Public Communications (1976–1985) and the University of South Florida (1985–1991). In addition, he has been a Distinguished Professor at the University of Navarra, Spain, as well as a lecturer at universities in 25 countries throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and Latin America.

Mario was named the 2014 Hearst Digital Media Professor in Residence at Columbia University’s School of Journalism where he is now the Senior Adviser for News Design and teaches as an adjunct professor.

Mario founded the Graphics & Design program at The Poynter Institute for Media Studies, of which is still a faculty affiliate, and where he continues to be involved with EyeTrack research (in 2012, EyeTrack study to test how iPad users read news on the new platform).

Mario has also been an American Press Institute presenter for over 200 seminars, as well as an organizer and moderator for dozens of seminars at IFRA (Germany) and IAPA (Latin America) and the WAN/IFRA organization, in which he continues to participate actively as a presenter and panel moderator.

Mario has received over 300 SND Awards including the Lifetime Achievement Award. People Magazine selected Mario among the 100 Most Influential Hispanics. He is a recipient of Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s Gold Key (1980)

Mario is a 2011 recipient of the University of Missouri School of Journalism ‘s Medal of Honor for Distinguished Service in Journalism.

Mario has recently completed his first digital book, The iPad Design Lab: Storytelling in the Age of the Tablet, available from iTunes.

Mario received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of South Florida (1969), Master of Arts and Ph. D., University of Miami (1972, 1976).
